“Consuming keeps us distracted, busy and numb. Numbness keeps us from becoming” – Glennon Doyle
Consuming is a trap. Think of all the time spent scrolling on social media. That’s a real trap!
Consuming at work is also a trap.
Consuming at work looks like:
- Taking on other people’s priorities
- Saying yes to unnecessary meetings
- Engaging in organisational noise
- Striving to meet other people’s expectations
- Being driven by artificial deadlines
On the surface all this consumption looks like dedication, productivity or high performance. It looks responsible and reliable.
However, when you’re always busy, you’re constantly in consumption mode. And constant consumption ends up numbing you.
How?
You abandon your dreams and ambitions in favour of feeling safe.
You mute yourself and stay in the familiar and functional – you say, “Let me finish this work for my boss first then I’ll think of leaving.”
You avoid growth and choose to cope instead – you say, “Let me wait, it’s not the right time.”
Numbing will keep you from becoming who you want to become.
So, what are you consuming at work and in life that’s making you numb? Are you brave enough to get to the uncomfortable truth by asking yourself the following:
- Am I really growing or just cruising ay work?
- Is what I’m doing right now aligned with my dreams and ambitions?
- Is being busy at work enabling me to avoid making a move I desire?
What did you discover?
